Chicago Campus NU Community Members only are exclusively invited to join one of the premier health and fitness clubs in Chicago - and best of all, have Northwestern help pay for it! Thanks to an arrangement between the University and Holmes Place Health Club, discounted memberships are available for NU students, McGaw residents, NU paid fellows, post docs, and full and part-time employees (and their spouses or same-sex domestic partners) on the Chicago campus. In addition, members will also have the use of the Chicago Park District's Lake Shore Park field house and facilities.

Amenities

Holmes Place Health Club

Holmes Place is located approximately four blocks south of campus at 355 E. Grand Ave. Group and Individual orientations of Holmes Place are available Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays from 10 – 11a.m. and 2 – 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary. All Northwestern Holmes Place members also receive a one hour personalized assessment and workout. Please contact Nick Giordano at 312.467.1111 to schedule your appointment.

The premier facility offers:

  • Stainless steel 25-meter lap pool with ozone filtration to minimize the irritation of chlorine
  • Incorporated hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room
  • Two separate workout areas offering a comprehensive range of equipment for both strength, toning and cardio workouts
  • Three group exercise studios, including a dedicated spinning room and space for Pilates, yoga and a wide range of unique group programming
  • Mondial Spa offers massages, facials, waxing, and a full menu of treatments featuring Sundari and Skinceuticals products
  • Luxurious locker rooms with plush towels, heated floors and private shower stalls
  • Underground secure parking validated at $3 for two hours or $6 for four hours
  • The River East Café offers a variety of healthy foods, beverages, gourmet coffee and espresso
  • WiFi available for all members and their guests

Chicago Park District Lake Shore Park Fieldhouse (CPD)

Northwestern also has contracted with the Chicago Park District, located at 808 N Lake Shore Dr, for exclusive use of the Lake Shore Park basketball court at certain times and non-exclusive access to the facility every day of the week (excluding certain summer hours). Complete schedule.

Access to the fieldhouse will be granted to those displaying a Holmes Place membership card with the words "Northwestern " printed on the back side and will include:

  • Use of cardio/fitness equipment donated by Northwestern to this facility (including a treadmill, cross trainer, stationary bike and similar machines, and weights)
  • Use of lockers and shower facilities

Membership Fees:

The University will help subsidize membership costs for eligible Chicago campus community members and their spouses/same-sex domestic partners. As a result, the annual membership cost will be only:

  • $138/each for full-time NU students or spouses/partners
  • $276/each for part-time NU students or McGaw residents or spouses/partners
  • $432/each for NU paid employees, fellows, post docs or spouses/partners

Students, OLLI members and Residents must submit their payment with the application when applying. Only paid employees with 18 hours or more per week can choose payroll deductions. NU paid Post-Docs and Fellows can also choose payroll deductions.

Eligibility:

Chicago campus students, paid faculty members, part and full-time employees are eligible for the Chicago fitness program pending status verification and/or affiliation. Part-time staff must work at least 18 hours or more on a regular basis to qualify. Temporary employees are not eligible for this program.

Paid Post-Doc and Fellows are eligible to participate in this program. Contributed Services Faculties are not eligible for this program. Nor are Medill School of Journalism students and staff taking classes at its Adams/Clark location.

Once a fitness club member becomes disassociated from Northwestern University or McGaw due to graduation or termination the member is no longer eligible to participate. They are required to notify University Services so their fitness club membership can be cancelled and a pro-rated refund of remaining full months can be issued if membership was paid for by check.

Cancellation Requirements:

In order to cancel your membership within your first year, one of the cancellation provisions on page three of the Holmes Place application/waiver must be applicable. Below is a summary list of reasons why you can cancel once you become an active member:

  • Graduation
  • Termination of employment
  • Relocation (more than 25 miles away from club)
  • Health Reasons (must have doctors note)
  • Cancellation within 7 days of membership active date
  • If member dies or becomes disabled

After the first year, your membership can be renewed; however cancellation provisions do not apply after year one and you can cancel at anytime for any reason. For cancellation or renewal, please send advance notice to University Services via email. If your employment or enrollment status changes, you are required to notify University Services. For example, if you disassociate from Northwestern University, or McGaw Medical Center, graduate, or change status from full-time to part-time student, notify University Services at 847-491-7569 or univsvcs@northwestern.edu.

Application and Deadlines:

Your applications and payment must be received by the 22nd of the month for your membership to become active on the 1st day of the following month. Applications and payments received after the 22nd of the month will postpone the start date of your membership until the 1st day of the second following month. For example, if John A. Student turns in his application and payment on the 27th of February, his membership will not be active until April 1st.

To sign up, complete both the Holmes Place Membership Application (Spouse/Partner must fill out and sign a separate Holmes Place Application/Waiver) and the Northwestern Fitness/Recreation Benefits Application. Membership is a 12 month contract except when and if you disassociate from NU. Once completed, please mail payment and applications to:

Membership Renewal:

University Services will send a renewal application 45-60 days prior to your membership expiration date. Please ensure that all information is complete, correct and updated when renewing your membership. The prompt return of the renewal application is encouraged; memberships not renewed 10 days prior to the expiration date will be cancelled. If you do not receive a renewal application at least 45 days prior to your membership expiration date, please contact Salem Marrougi at 847-467-0662 or s-marrougi@northwestern.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Am I required to notify University Services of changes in employment/student status, and/or campus location?
    All Northwestern Holmes Place active members must notify University Services of changes in employment status, student status, campus location and/or disassociation from the University. This includes departure from NU or McGaw, leaves of absence, changes in student status from full-time to part-time, graduation, and departure from the Chicago campus.   • How do I determine membership fees?
    Annual membership fees are determined by an individual's status at the University:
    *Full time students (must be enrolled in 3 or more classes per quarter)-$138
    *Part time students (must be enrolled in 1 to 2 classes per quarter), OLLI members,
    Residents (currently in residency at McGaw or preparing to become a resident)- $276
    *NU employees (works 18 hours per week regularly)-$432
    Please note:employees who are also students have a primary status of employee
  • Can any NU affiliate member join Holmes Place?

  • Will my membership be cancelled once I disassociate from NU even if I have time left on my 12-month membership?
    Once you've disassociated from NU due to graduation or termination of employment, you are no longer eligible for membership with Holmes Place through NU.
  • When does my membership start after I send in my application?
    If your application is received prior to the 22nd of the month, your membership will begin the following 1st of the month pending verification and approval. Please factor in variables such as the length of time it might take the Chicago Post Office to deliver mail to Evanston.
  • Can I start or cancel my membership mid-month?
    Membership is activated on the 1st of the month. Please see Cancellation Requirements for information on cancellation policies.
  • Can I fax my NU application and HP waiver, and then mail you my check?
    If you're paying by check or money order you must submit your payment with your application and waiver. Eligible employees choosing payroll deductions may fax their applications.
  • Can I pay by credit card or charge my student account?
    We accept payment by check, money order or payroll deductions (eligible employees only).
  • Do I have to send a copy of my marriage certificate if I am including my spouse in my membership?
    We cannot process your application unless you provide us with a copy of the marriage certificate when applying for spousal membership. Certificates in a foreign language are acceptable as well.
  • Is my same-sex domestic partner eligible for membership?
    Yes, if you're eligible and you have completed a Declaration of Same Sex Domestic Relationship forms on file with Benefits in Human Resources.
  • Can I suspend my fitness club membership for the summer?
    Membership is annual and cannot be suspended. If a member's primary campus location changes from Chicago to Evanston due to classes, they may suspend their membership for that quarter(s) until resuming classes on the Chicago campus.
