If your computer or laptop has seen better days, there are many ways to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner:

If your computer is less than 5 years old and in working condition:

Consider donating your computer to a school or non-profit group like Computers for Schools. Or, visit tech soup's website to search for other groups that would welcome your donation. Visit the EPA's website for more tips on donating your computer.

If your computer is more than 5 years old, broken, or below Pentium PC (or Mac Power) level, you should consider recycling it.

Students can recycle their computer equipment by dropping them off at one of our convenient student recycling locations. We will accept the following equipment for recycling: desktop computers, laptops, mice, monitors, keyboards, speakers, scanners, printers, fax machines, magnetic tape, and CDs (without cases).

Evanston Campus Drop Off:
The WildCARD Office
Norris Center
9am – 4pm
Monday through Friday

Chicago Campus Drop Off:
Arthur Rubloff Building Loading Dock
9am – 1pm
Monday through Friday

Our recycling program ensures that all data on the hard drive is destroyed and the equipment is recycled in a way that is compliant with EPA standards.

How about recycling your old phone?

The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) maintains a website with a list of places you can donate your cell phone. The Call to Protect Program provides donated wireless phones to domestic violence agencies. Collective Good also maintains a website listing a number of charitable organizations that would be happy to receive your retired cell phone.

Most cellular carriers also have a program in place to recycle or reuse donated phones:

Cingular

Sprint

T-Mobile

Verizon
