Faculty & Staff Personal (non-University owned) Equipment
If your personal computer or laptop has seen better days, there are many ways to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner:
If your computer is less than 5 years old and in working condition:
Consider donating your computer to a school or non-profit group like Computers for Schools. Or, visit tech soup's website to search for other groups that would welcome your donation. Visit the EPA's website for more tips on donating your computer.
If your computer is more than 5 years old, broken, or below Pentium PC (or Mac Power) level, you should consider recycling it.
Many computer manufacturers have recycling programs already in place for their products. Some may even give you discounts on purchasing your next computer:
Dell
HP
Apple
Gateway
IBM/Lenovo
Sony Trade-in Program
There are many local groups that will also recycle your computer equipment:
In Lake County, call 847-336-9340, or go to: www.co.lake.il.us/swalco/disposal/electronics.asp
In Northern Cook County, call 847-296-9205, or go to www.swancc.org
In West Cook County, call 708-450-0100, or go to www.westcook.org
